Risk and Treatment of High Cholesterol

High cholesterol is a severe health condition which has become quite common among a majority of the adult population. This condition is actually a result of high levels of bad cholesterol (low density cholesterol) in your body. This condition is more commonly experienced by men in comparison to that of women. High cholesterol as such is not a disease in itself but it can lead to many other severe health conditions. Most of the time, a person suffering from this condition is hardly aware of it, which can further increase the risks.

High levels of low density cholesterol, or the “bad” cholesterol, can cause narrowing of your arteries, a condition which is known as atherosclerosis. It can also lead to other cardiovascular conditions such as heart attacks or strokes. When your arteries get clogged with cholesterol, they can prevent oxygen from reaching your heart, brain and other parts of your body. High cholesterol also leads to blood clotting or coronary heart disease. Erectile dysfunction is another of the health problems that is caused by high cholesterol.

You can treat this condition with the help of prescription medications such as Simvastatin. This pill belongs to the category of statins, which are used for lowering the blood cholesterol levels. It works by decreasing the production of low density cholesterol by your liver and promotes the production of high density cholesterol. Simvastatin is available in the dosage strength of 5mg, 10mg, 20mg, 40mg and 80mg. Generally, doctors will prescribe 20mg or a 40mg dosage for the patients. You are required to take one pill before you go to bed, as the liver produces the maximum amount of low density cholesterol during the night.
